Best Virginia Tech quotes after dominating Old Dominion
By Scott Roche
After beating Old Dominion, 37-17, Saturday night on the road, several Virginia Tech coaches and players met with the media in Norfolk. It was a win that the Hokies desperately needed after dropping their only two other games at ODU in upsets. It's the first win in the series by a road team after Tech won three in Blacksburg and the Monarchs won the two on their home turf.
After the 20-point victory, here are some of the best quotes from Virginia Tech, incuding head coach Brent Pry.
Brent Pry on running the ball with Bhayshul Tuten
Bhayshul Tuten finished with 115 yards rushing on 21 carries and a pair of touchdowns. He came into the game nursing a leg injury, but it didn't appear to be bothering him, especially on a touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter when he broke through some tackles to reach the end zone from 16 yards out.
"I think we just had to commit to it,'' Pry said. "Sometimes you’ve got to have a little patience and keep handing it off to 33."
Again, when Tuten has the ball in his hands, good things happen for the Hokies and it needs to be in his hands as much as possible.
Brent Pry talked up the lack of success the Hokies have had in Norfolk during the week
Virginia Tech's struggles at Old Dominion are well known and this week, quarterback Kyron Drones said that Pry reminded his team about it as motivation for facing the Monarchs on their home field.
"That's all Coach Pry talked about the whole week, showing that score. This was kind of a statement game to change the narrative."
For one week, they changed the narrative with another strong second half to pull away from a four-point halftime lead to win by 20 points. The defense set the tone again and the offense took off again in the second half after having two very good drives to open the game before sputtering again before halftime.
Brent Pry on his team responding throughout the game
Sometimes how good a team is comes down to how they respond to adversity in a game and that was the case for the Hokies. The offense struggled late in the first quarter and the second quarter before putting up 23 second-half points. Aside from two drives from ODU in the second quarter and two big runs, the defense more than responded the rest of the game.
“We responded in all three phases at some point during this game,” said Pry. “And it was necessary. ”
ODU coach Ricky Rahne says his team has to get better
Virginia Tech's defense, mainly in the second half, limited the number of offensive plays for the Monarchs and it allowed the offense to pull away. Old Dominion coach Ricky Rahne said his team needs to get better after dropping to 0-3.
“We (have) to get better,” Rahne said. “That’s the bottom line. We have to be able to sustain drives at a higher level. And you know, there was a moment there in the second quarter when I thought we were playing pretty well up front, moving people around and doing some things like that, but we weren’t able to sustain that into the third and early fourth.”
If Rahne knew anything going into this game, it should have been that the Hokies defense has been good in their first two second halfs and that was the case again Saturday night.
