3 post-spring breakout candidates for Virginia Tech football on offense
By Scott Roche
Malachi Thomas: RB
Last season, North Carolina A&T transfer Bhayshul Tuten took over the workload at running back with Malachi Thomas earning some reps as well. Heck, he even became a nice option to throw the ball which he did for a touchdown and they opened the Spring Game with him attempting it as well. Drones also took off running the ball creating a running game that opened up the passing game.
Running backs Jeremiah Coney and PJ Prioleau looked very good in the Hokies Spring Game and made the case to see more action in the fall, but Thomas is a back that brings multiple options to the table and is set up for a breakout season. He had 381 yards on the ground on 83 carries last season and a pair of touchdowns. He had nine catches for 49 yards out of the backfield, while also showing off his arm against Syracuse with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Da’Quan Felton. He brings a lot to the table for the Hokies and he has a chance to make a bigger impact in 2024.
