3 bold Virginia Tech football predictions against Stanford
By Scott Roche
We will learn a lot about the Virginia Tech football team this weekend. After losing at Miami, 38-34, last Friday night in the fashion they did with an overturned touchdown on the game's final play, how will the Hokies respond to having to fly cross-country to play first-year ACC member Stanford?
Sitting at 2-3, the new 12-team College Football Playoff is gone for Brent Pry’s team, and over the final seven games, it’s about trying to become bowl-eligible to avoid turning this season into a major disappointment. The first step begins this week against the Cardinal before four of their last six games are at Lane Stadium. As we look ahead to Stanford, here are three bold predictions for this Saturday’s game in California.
Bhayshul Tuten records fifth straight 100-plus yard game
The Hokies face a strong test against a stout Stanford line. Last week Clemson rushed for 150 yards against the ACC’s top-ranked unit against the run and the opportunity is there for the Hokies to do the same. Can Bhayshul Tuten and Kyron Drones get the running game going?
Of course, that depends on the offensive line and their ability to win the battle in the trenches. It’s a banged-up line and it’s going to have its hands full, but if Virginia Tech can run the ball, it’s going to make things easier a bit on the offense. Feed Tuten early and often.
Virginia Tech doesn’t cover the spread, again
According to DraftKings, Virginia Tech opened up as a 5-point favorite on Sunday, which seemed a tad high. Well, as the week has gone along, the line has gotten bigger and is now up to 8.5 points at the time this article is being written. One thing we have learned this season is the Hokies have not fared well against the spread. They covered last weekend at Miami and they covered at Old Dominion, but they failed to cover against Vanderbilt, Rutgers, or Marshall. Expect the Hokies not to cover again this weekend.
Virginia Tech special teams play a clean game
A once proud unit of the program has turned into a nightmare at times this season. They have yet to play a clean game on special teams, whether it’s a coaching gaffe, turnover, missed field goal, or blocked punt. There is a gut feeling that this weekend at Stanford they finally play a game without a hiccup with their special teams.
This is a big game for the Hokies as 3-3 going into their first bye week feels a lot better than 2-4 with Boston College and Georgia Tech looming the rest of the month at home. Again, we’ll learn a lot about Virginia Tech this weekend.
