Another week, another week of head-scratching results across college football. In fact, you could there was more chaos when it came to predicting the 12-team College Football Playoff field.

Seven days after knocking off Texas A&M on the road, the path for Notre Dame was thought to be about as clear to the CFP as any team had. Then Northern Illinois showed up. Playing their home opener, the Irish's playoff hopes took a major hit with a stunning 16-14 loss on a late game-winning field goal.

Notre Dame worked the ball near midfield, but their winning field goal attempt was blocked sending shock waves throughout college football. Now they are Notre Dame, but a loss like this is going to be tough to come back from. You get the feeling if they run the table, the CFP committee will find a way to get them in the 12-team field.

As expected, there is no change at the top of the rankings this week, but after that, Notre Dame and Michigan fall out with their losses. The defending National Champs losing at home to Texas, 34-12, all but ends their hopes unless they win the Big Ten, something that seems very far-fetched at this time.

Jumping into the rankings after the Irish and Wolverines losses are USC, which showed no letdown against Utah State after beating LSU last Sunday night, and Tennessee which routed North Carolina State in the Dukes Mayo Classic in Charlotte Saturday night.

Boise State remains in despite losing by three points at Oregon, while Ole Miss and Alabama move up after wins. Again, there is only one ACC team in the field and unless something happens, that's the way it very well might end up at the end of the season and right now, Miami is head and shoulders above everyone else. For now.
