2024 Week 1 12-team College Football Playoff rankings prediction
By Scott Roche
Week 1 of the college football season is nearly complete and there were more questions than. answers as we complete the first full weekend. The top teams did what they needed to do to prove that they are where they belong in different rankings with blowout wins.
Then some teams stumbled and had a lot more questions going forward into Week 2 than answers. It was not a good weekend for the ACC, to say the least, with Clemson getting rolled by Georgia and Virginia Tech losing at Vanderbilt. Could Georgia Tech emerge as Miami's biggest roadblock in the conference this season?
In the SEC, they flexed their muscle nearly up and down the conference with newcomers Texas and Oklahoma, the new members, rolling to wins, while Georgia's win over Clemson was because of a dominating second half, but their defense shut down a talented Tigers offense in the first half and allowed them to pull away in the second 30 minutes.
Penn State had an impressive win at West Virginia and let's not overlook Notre Dame's win at Texas A&M as the Irish with a very favorable schedule set themselves up for a CFP berth, even if they somehow lost two games this season. With that said, let's take our weekly look at the 12-team 2024 CFP rankings.
2024 Week 1 12-team CFP predictions
Rank | Team | Why they are here | Last Week |
---|---|---|---|
1. | Georgia | SEC Champ | 1 |
2. | Ohio State | Big Ten Champ | 2 |
3. | Utah | Big 12 Champ | 3 |
4. | Miami | ACC Champ | 4 |
5. | Notre Dame | At-Large | 6 |
6. | Texas | At-Large | 5 |
7. | Oregon | At-Large | 7 |
8. | Ole Miss | At-Large | 8 |
9. | Penn State | At-Large | 11 |
10. | Alabama | At-Large | 9 |
11. | Michigan | At-Large | 10 |
12. | Boise State | MW Champ | 12 |
There was some movement within the latest rankings, but all 12 teams remained the same. Notre Dame's win moved the Irish up to the highest spot they can be at No. 5 and Penn State's statement win at West Virginia moved them up to No. 9.
Georgia separated itself from the rest of the field, for now, while Ohio State will get tested sooner or later, but schools like Ole Miss and Alabama won't have many losses on their schedules and if they win the games they're supposed to, they'll be fine.
Week 2 will bring some very interesting matchups that could affect next week's rankings, but so far the chalk holds rank through Week 1.
