2024 Preseason 12-team College Football Playoff rankings prediction
By Scott Roche
It's hard to believe, but here we are, the 2024 college football season is just about here. With the new season comes the excitement of the new 12-team College Football Playoff. It gives a lot more fanbases more hope and a better opportunity to see their team get a shot to win a National Championship.
Along with the new CFP format, there was a bunch of realignment as well. As far as the ACC goes, California, Stanford, and SMU joined the ACC, while Texas and Oklahoma joined the SEC from the Big 12. Gone is the PAC-12 that we all grew up with leaving the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, and SEC as the four power conferences.
The Associated Press Top 25 Poll was released Monday with the SEC and Big Ten dominating it, which isn't surprising. Some of the programs that have been at the top were there with Georgia, Ohio State, Oregon, and Texas leading the way.
As we approach Week 0 with four games on tap on Aug. 24, two of which include ACC teams, here is a preseason look at predicting the 12-team College Football Playoff.
2024 Preseason 12-team CFP prediction
Rank | Team | How | Last Week |
---|---|---|---|
1. | Georgia | SEC Champ | N/A |
2. | Ohio State | Big Ten Champ | N/A |
3. | Texas | At-Large | N/A |
4. | Florida State | ACC Champ | N/A |
5. | Oregon | At-Large | N/A |
6. | Utah | Big 12 Champ | N/A |
7. | Notre Dame | At-Large | N/A |
8. | Ole Miss | At-Large | N/A |
9. | Alabama | At-Large | N/A |
10. | Michigan | At-Large | N/A |
11. | Penn State | At-Large | N/A |
12. | Boise State | MW Champ | N/A |
Some teams in here can likely lose two games, Georgia and Ohio State headline that list, and still get a CFP berth even if they don't win their Conference Championship Game. Maybe even Alabama and Notre Dame could also survive a pair of losses and get an at-large bid.
Boise State (Mountain West) is the Group of 5 team to get a bid as conference champion. Florida State is the only ACC team I have in the field, at the moment, but that could and likely will change as Clemson and Miami are the other teams that'll be in the mix, and maybe even Virginia Tech, North Carolina State, and Louisville.
This is the season college football fans have been waiting for with the expansion of the CFP and now we get a 12-team field for the first time and a month's worth of postseason football.
