As we hit the end of the media days throughout college football with the various conferences, camps begin next week for most programs with an eye toward the season beginning in just over a month. During the last couple of weeks, we have heard trashing talk from conference to conference with brave statements, while some players taking some subtle and not so subtle shots at other programs both within and out of their conference.
One topic that has been a hot topic and will be until the end of time, it feels with college football is the season and the College Football Playoff format. How many teams should get in? When should the regular season start and end? How about when to play the CFP games and where? All topics that we'll hear about for years to come. At the Big Ten press conference, Oregon coach Dan Lanning had a quote that speaks for most, if not all, college football fans, and it has been brought up numerous times in the past, more or less quietly.
Oregon coach Dan Lanning speaks for most college football fans in terms of the schedule
Lanning spoke to Yahoo Sports about when the college football season should begin and end, with the season beginning at Week 0, then eliminating long byes, especially when it comes to the CFP where the teams with the byes after the first weekend of postseason games didn't fare well at all.
“College football season should end Jan. 1,” said Lanning. “That solves a lot of the problems that exist. All four teams that had a bye lost. There’s something to that.''
We agree, Coach. Now you could make the case that it might be somewhat of sour grapes on his part after his team was one of the four bounced after a bye, but this is a move that A LOT of people would favor. The college football season is so long that teams get two byes during the season, and then the top teams get another month break before playing some pivotal playoff games. This would be a move that would make too much sense and fans would really like.
