Going into the season, there was a lot of high expectations surrounding the Virginia Tech football team. So far the Hokies have come up short in living up to them, but they are not too far away from being where some fans expected them to be.

In fact, just how close they are in one stat wil frustrated fans. A play here, a play there or one less mistake here or one less mistake there and the outlook of the final six games of the 2024 season are a lot different than they are today.

One stat that will frustrate Virginia Tech fans through six games

The Hokies are not too far from being 6-0 and you could make the case that they are the best 3-3 team in the country. This year, in their three losses, they all have been one score games that have totaled 14 points. That’s right, they’re 14 points away from being 6-0 at the midway point during their bye this weekend.

To break it down even more as to why they are in the position they’re in, only three other teams in the country are 0-3 in one-score games and one team is 0-4 in one-score games. The teams that are 0-3 with the Hokies in one-score games are Bowling Green, Nevada, and Old Dominion. Kansas is 0-4 in one-score games.

The one common theme that all four of those teams have in common is that they are all below .500. One thing to take away from this is that the Hokies are close to being the team we all thought they were going to be. That was evident in the last two games against Miami, a four-point loss after an overturned touchdown by replay on the game’s final play, and a dominating 31-7 victory at Stanford last weekend.

There is still an outside shot that the Hokies can run the table and reach the ACC Championship Game if things out of their control break their way, but that’s a tough ask. With six games, they can change the narrative and stat that has frustrated fans since Week 1 at Vanderbilt.
