During his press conference on Wednesday, when he was introduced as the new head football coach at Virginia Tech, James Franklin made it clear to the current members of the football team under interim Philip Montgomery, he would like some retention.
There are going to be some players brought in through the Transfer Portal for next year, and maybe Franklin adds some true freshmen who can slide into the lineup and play some big snaps. One incoming freshman this year that former coach Brent Pry and his coaches were excited for was running back Jeffrey Overton, Jr.
The Woodbridge, Va. native battled injuries early in the season, but since he has been healthy and in the lineup, Montgomery has used him as a part of the offense. Against Miami and one of the top defenses in the country, he put on an impressive show for his potential new head coach.
Jeffrey Overton, Jr. impresses against a talented Miami defense
Overton has impressed in previous games, but against the Hurricanes, he had some big, explosive runs for Montgomery. That was never more evident than just after halftime, and Virginia Tech was trailing 20-3.
On the first drive of the second half, the Hokies were driving into Miami territory and had a first down at the Hurricanes' 38 when he took a handoff from quarterback Kyron Drones and went 38 yards with some explosiveness to the end zone for a touchdown.

Franklin likely did some homework on the roster long before he signed his contract on the Virginia Tech roster. There are likely targets he would like to keep bringing back next season, and Overton, Jr. is making the case to be one of those players. He came in highly-regarded from the staff before the season, and he's living up to some of those expectations so far and impressing.
