It has been a quiet Transfer Portal for Virginia Tech men's basketball coach Mike Young. There have been more players going out the door in Blacksburg than coming in. There was some key retention with Amani Hansberry, Tyler Johnson, and Ben Hammond returning.

The Hokies do have one commitment from Oklahoma transfer Kuol Atak, who should be a nice fit in Young's system next season. However, with more players heading out than coming in, there is a ton of work that needs to be done in roster building for next season.

The portal will close soon, and players don't need to commit before then. As it has been brought up many times before, Virginia Tech got a commitment in May a couple of years ago from Duke transfer Jayden Schutt. Over the weekend, it was reported that a Long Beach State transfer was visiting Blacksburg, and he should be a priority for Young and his staff going forward.

Virginia Tech's next Transfer Portal target is becoming clear

According to Sam Kayser, Long Beach State transfer Gavin Sykes visited Blacksburg this weekend, during the Hokies' spring football game, and then will take a trip to TCU and visit with Jamie Dixon.

Sykes would be a huge addition for Virginia Tech. One thing is for sure, he can guarantee him plenty of playing time in 2026-27. The Big West Freshman of the Year for the 49ers, Sykes averaged 19.4 points, 3 rebounds, and 1.5 assists a game. The 6-foot-4, Sacramento, California native shot 47% from the floor this past season and 39% from behind the arc. He had four 30-point games in 2025-26.

Young has a nice nucleus returning, but adding a player like Sykes would be a huge addition for Virginia Tech. The rest of the ACC is getting better, and if the Hokies are going to erase the bad memories of this past season, replacing the outgoing talent needs to happen.
