When Mike Young was hired as the next men's basketball coach at Virginia Tech, while he was at Wofford, the veteran bench-boss had one player who committed to him with the Terriers, but followed him to Blacksburg in 2019, sharpshooter Hunter Cattoor.

Little did anyone know what Cattoor was going to do in his time in Blacksburg as a player. He played five seasons for the Hokies and set the program record for games played with 152. However, it was during the 2022 ACC Tournament that he made his name for Virginia Tech.

In the championship game against Duke, Cattoor dropped 31 points on the Blue Devils, and the Hokies needed every single one of them to hold Duke to capture the ACC Tournament Championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. After he graduated, you had a feeling that he was going to get into coaching, and he is, but he'll do it under his former college coach.

Virginia Tech hires Hunter Cattoor as assistant coach on Mike Young's staff

On Thursday, the school announced that Cattoor was being brought back, this time as an assistant coach on Young's staff.

“I could not be more excited to welcome Hunter back home to Blacksburg as a member of our coaching staff,” Young said in a school-issued release. “Hunter represented Virginia Tech men’s basketball the right way from the moment he stepped on campus; he’s tough, competitive, unselfish, and he understands our culture, our standards, and what it means to wear ‘Hokies’ across your chest. I am very much looking forward to the impact he’ll have on our program.”

If there is someone to bring in that can work with shooters and point guards, it's Cattoor. He owns Virginia Tech records for 3-pointers made, 322, which included nine in a game against Florida State in 2022. That was a performance to remember. He is also a 1,000-point scorer.

After his time in college, he spent time with the Long Island Nets in the G League. He averaged 8.4 points a night in 27 games, while shooting 43% from behind the arc. This is a nice addition to Young's staff and not surprising. Cattoor was one of Young's favorite players to coach in Blacksburg.
