Just when you thought that the Virginia Tech men's basketball roster was set for the upcoming season, guess again. After going through a spring Transfer Portal where some key players exited, but head coach Mike Young and his staff retained some key players, along with grabbing some intriguing players in the portal, it appears that Young and his staff weren't done.
Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports reported that Virginia Tech has made a late portal addition after signing Clemson transfer Efrem "Butta" Johnson, who should solidify the Hokies' backcourt and give the Hokies more options in 2026-27.

Mike Young adds rotation depth for 2026-27
Johnson, an Alabama native, played 35 games last season for the Tigers, averaging 6.3 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.0 assists per game. He played his first three seasons at UAB before transferring to Clemson for last season. His best season was in 2023-24 when he averaged 11.2 points and 2.3 rebounds per game for the Blazers.
In last season's matchup with Virginia Tech at home for Clemson, Johnson played 17 minutes and went 0-for-2 from the floor. In Clemson's season-ending 67-61 first-round loss to Iowa in the NCAA Tournament in March, Johnson had 11 points in 31 minutes. The 6-foot-4 guard is a 34.7% 3-point shooter during his career and will likely look to improve on that in Blacksburg this upcoming winter.
As mentioned above, Virginia Tech got some key retention with Ben Hammond, Tyler Johnson, and Amani Hansberry returning, but the Hokies added Oklahoma State transfer Jaylen Curry, Stetson transfer Ethan Copeland, Florida Atlantic transfer Isaiah Elohim, Elon transfer Ned Hull, San Diego State transfer Miles Heide, Oklahoma transfer Kuol Atak, and North Carolina State transfer Musa Sagnia through the portal.
There are a lot of unknowns with this Virginia Tech roster going into the season, but the potential is there. They will have a tough non-conference schedule to get things ironed out before ACC play begins, but given the current state of college basketball, the roster turnover should not come as a surprise.
