There has been another offseason of turnover for Mike Young and the Virginia Tech men's basketball program. Several key contributors from this past season's club have hit the Transfer Portal, including freshman Neoklis Avdalas. However, Young was able to get some key retention with forwards Amani Hansberry and Tyler Johnson, along with guard Ben Hammond.
Virginia Tech added some experience through the portal for next season to go with the returning players, but there were still three roster spots available for the 2026-27 season. With everyone gone from the portal, it's going to have to be likely filled with high school players, if that is still possible.
On Monday, Young and Virginia Tech proved it was still possible.
Virginia Tech men's basketball secures commitment from incoming freshman Eltayeb Eltayeb
Class of 2026 wing, Eltayeb Eltayeb, announced his commitment to the Hokies on Monday, and he is the 13th roster player for Young. There are still two more spots open.
Eltayeb is from Sudan and played a post-grad season at Sunrise Christian Academy, where he averaged 21.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 3.1 assists a game this season. Once a guard, he can shoot the ball from the outside, where he shot 43% from behind the arc, but he can also put the ball on the floor and get to the basket. He could be a matchup problem for other teams.
However, given who Virginia Tech has coming back and who they have added through the Transfer Portal, Eltayeb is going to have to earn his playing time, which is hard to do under Young for a freshman at times. Johnson and Hammond were able to see a lot of time on the floor as rookies in Blacksburg, and Avdalas' talent spoke for itself last year. The two remaining roster spots will likely be filled with more high school recruits by Young.
