May is sometimes a quiet month for college basketball, but that wasn't the case for Virginia Tech men's coach Mike Young. Not when you have had another roster overhaul and need additions from the Transfer Portal.

The Hokies lost some key players to the portal, but they also got some key retention with point guard Ben Hammond, and forwards Amani Hansberry and Tyler Johnson. It was much-needed retention after freshman Neoklis Avdalas left the portal for North Carolina.

Young's latest addition in the portal came in May from Stetson guard Ethan Campbell. He averaged 15 points a game last season and shot 43% from behind the arc. He is the latest guard addition for the Hokies, who lacked that last season, depth in the backcourt. It wouldn't be surprising if there are another addition or two, maybe from the high school ranks.

NCAA Tournament expansion is a go

It has been rumored for a while that the NCAA Tournament was looking to go to 76 teams. There are people for it; however, there were more people against it. Why ruin something that doesn't need to be tinkered with? It feels like 68 teams are too much currently.

Anyway, the number is going up to 76 teams next season, and it opens the door for more schools to have hope. However, it also opens the door for more teams to be on the bubble and not get in. If this was in place a year earlier, the Hokies likely get in this past season. Maybe. Did they deserve to be in a 76-team field? It's debatable, but that is what we're looking at going forward: a lot of bubble teams entering their conference tournament with new hope.

Virginia Tech ACC schedule offers a big break, maybe?

The ACC dropped the opponents for the 2026-27 season schedule. The dates and times will be announced at a later date, but at least we know who the Hokies are going to play. For the second straight year, with a new scheduling model, Virginia Tech will not play one ACC foe. This year, that foe will be Duke.

That can be good, and that can be bad. Virginia Tech hosted the Blue Devils this season, which would have meant a clash between the two teams would have been in Durham. However, instead, the Hokies lose an NCAA Tournament résumé-building opportunity. Instead, the Hokies will play a second game with Boston College, along with their annual two clashes with Virginia in the Commonwealth Clash.
