As soon as the news broke that Virginia Tech was firing football coach Brent Pry, speculation began about who was going to replace him. Of course, Michael Vick's name came up, and why not? The Hokies' legend coming home to rescue the program is a story that a lot of people would like to see happen.
How about Vick? He was hired just nine months ago at Norfolk State, his first coaching job, and Pete Nakos of On3 had a source who hinted that something may be up behind the scenes regarding Vick's coaching experience and a potential opening at Virginia Tech someday. That day is here.
Michael Vick answers question about Virginia Tech opening
Vick met with the media ahead of Norfolk State's game against Sacred Heart, and as no surprise to anyone, he was asked about the opening in Blacksburg, and honestly, he had a veteran coach's response.
"This team's got to follow my lead," said Vick. "My primary focus right now is Norfolk State. That's all we can focus on. I hope they're not reading the newspaper clippings or looking into what's happening on the social pages, because I don't do it. We've got Sacred Heart this week. That's the most important thing in our lives right now."
Again, talk about a response that sounds like he's been on the sidelines for years. I'm not sure what anyone was expecting to get for an answer from him, as he is not going to come out right now and address it on a conference call, but his focus is on the game this week for Norfolk State.
That doesn't mean that he hasn't thought about it since Pry was fired, or even before taking the job in Norfolk. Now that he has addressed it, let the rumors swirl and begin until a new coach is hired in Blacksburg.
