This offseason, Virginia Tech men's basketball coach Mike Young dipped into International waters to add some key recruits to the incoming class. Now, women's coach Megan Duffy has done the same thing to add to her 2025-26 roster.

Virginia Tech announced that Špela Brecelj from Slovenia is joining the program as a forward and guard, the school announced on Thursday. Regardless, she gives Duffy much-needed height on the inside and can handle the ball as well.

“We are thrilled to welcome Špela to our Virginia Tech women’s basketball team,” said Duffy on the school website. “Her experience playing all across Europe for the Slovenian national team has been impressive to follow. Špela is a versatile player that can play multiple positions and will bring a great work ethic and passion for the game to Hokie Nation.”

Brecelj brings a lot of experience playing at the International level, as she won three Gold Medals at the European Championships in 2022 and 2023. She won with the U18B in 2022, and U18A and U20B in 2023.

Brecelj joins what is a very promising Class of 2025 that includes Katie Sears, Amani Jenkins, and Aniya Trent. It rounds a roster for Duffy's second season in Blacksburg that also had key retention with key players Carleigh Wenzel, Carys Baker, Mackenzie Nelson, and Kayl Petersen returning. Transfers Sophie Swanson, Melannie Daley, and Kilah Freelon.

Duffy is looking to get the Hokies to the NCAA Tournament in her second season in Blacksburg after replacing Kenny Brooks when he left for Kentucky. She had an NCAA Tournament résumé, but Virginia Tech was the first team left out of the 68-team field in March. She has a deeper roster this year and has added some versatile players, something teams can not have enough of.
