Kyron Drones Named to Davey O’Brien Class of 2024 List
By Roy Hatfield
The Virginia Tech Hokies are on a bit of a heater. Brent Pry now has his first three-game winning streak as the head coach of the Hokies. The reason behind the streak firmly lives in the offensive backfield. Bhayshul Tuten can be credited, but the Virginia Tech offense stops and starts with the QB1, Kyron Drones.
Ever since winning the starting gig, Drones has been remarkably consistent and outstanding. When Drones landed in Blacksburg from Baylor, it wasn’t met with much fanfare. I kept my eyes glued, expecting big things from Mr. Drones. Virginia Tech was in a bit of a QB1 cold snap. Justin Fuente post-Jerod Evans never really found his guy, and the Hokies were deficient in the most important position on the team. Enter Drones.
The career path for Drones has been slow and steady. He has grown from game manager to game breaker. His performance against Miami was defining. He can run, throw, and generally be a problem for opposing defenses. Tech is currently on the second consecutive back-of-the-year improvement and Kyron Drones is directly to thank. After the shocking loss to Vanderbilt, the Hokies seemed a bit lost. Drones righted the ship. He has led a few second-half comebacks and established himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the A.C.C..
When the Davey O’Brien Foundation announced its 35 finalists, I was a bit surprised. Not surprised that Drones were included, just surprised the national media has appreciated Drones as much as we have. Having watched so much sub-par QB play in the past, it has been a real treat watching Drones drop dimes against opposing defenses. Drones deserves the accolades, and as the season winds down expect more to come. It couldn’t happen to a better student-athlete and good luck Mr. Drones.
