When camp started on Friday for the Virginia Tech football team, there are a lot of players who will get some attention this summer, and one of those players is quarterback Kyron Drones. Entering his third season in Blacksburg, it's safe to say that he is the key to the Hokies' hopes on offense in 2025.

The Baylor transfer had his 2024 campaign shut down early with injuries that forced him to miss four out of the final five games, Syracuse, Duke, Virginia, and the Duke's Mayo Bowl against Minnesota. He came back to play at home against Clemson a week after missing the game at Syracuse, but he wasn't the same player and was shut down for the rest of the season.

As spring practices were winding down in April, head coach Brent Pry announced that Drones was shutting down again, this time for a medical procedure. Now healthy, Pry wants to keep it that way, but Drones was having nothing of it on the first day of practice.

Kyron Drones exceeds expectations on Day 1 of camp

As expected, Pry would love to take it slow with Drones, who had surgery in April. However, the competitiveness in Drones took over, and Pry rode the first day of momentum.

"I thought Kyron looked really rhythmic and consistent today,'' said Pry. "He operated the offense fast and efficient. I wasn't sure he would come out on day one and do that with the defense lined up and things full tilt, but he did. He looked really sharp today."

It's only one day, but that is a very promising take on Drones' first day. This is only day one, and there are still 30 more until the season opener against South Carolina in Atlanta, but you could not have asked for a better report on the first day from Pry. If he remains healthy, Drones should be on a mission this season for a bounce-back year and make a case for the NFL Draft for 2026. It's only one day, but a very promising start that Virginia Tech needs from its most important player on offense.
