Going into the 2025 season, there are a lot of positions that the Virginia Tech football team needs to replace. Maybe the biggest makeover job is going to be along the offensive line, where all five starters from last season's team are no longer on the roster for various reasons.
Gone is offensive line coach Ron Crook, and in is former West Virginia coach Matt Moore, who has been tasked by head coach Brent Pry to rebuild the line on the fly. That line is going to key in 2025 as it protects the biggest player that needs to remain healthy all season: Kyron Drones.
The Baylor transfer a couple of years ago needs to stay healthy this season if Virginia Tech hopes to not only go to a bowl game for the third consecutive season, but also save some jobs in Blacksburg. At the ACC Kickoff in Charlotte on Thursday, the Hokies took to the stage to talk with the media about the upcoming season, and Drones dropped a hint as to who he wants in front of him blocking this fall.
Virginia Tech QB Kyron Drones drops potential offensive line at media day
Speaking with the media, Drones dropped who the offensive line might likely be, and truth be told, it could be good. Maybe very good.
Virginia Tech QB Kyron Drones on the OL: “My best five is Johnny [Garrett], Layth [Ghannam], Kyle [Altuner], Montavious [Cunningham] and Tommy [Rimac].”

Montavious Cinningham, Johnny Garrett, and Layth Ghannam were on the roster last season, but mostly stuck behind the players who played a lot of snaps last season and are gone. They all didn't sit all year and got some playing time, but now it's their turn to protect their QB1.
As for Kyle Altuner and Tommy Rimac, they followed Moore from Morgantown to Blacksburg and should fill huge needs along the line. Moore has a history of producing NFL prospects and could be a huge pickup for Pry this season.
Drones has spoken as to who he wants and expects blocking for him this season, and he has earned that right. Now the only question is, will he stay healthy? If he does, good things could be in store for the Hokies in 2025.
