When it comes to recruiting, new Virginia Tech football coach James Franklin has always had some success. When he was at Penn State before being fired, he was able to recruit at a high level and always had some of the top recruiting classes in the country.

Nobody expects that to change now that he's in Blacksburg. Recruiting under Franklin and his staff is going to thrive. Case in point, Franklin has been on a heater in recruiting and now has a Top 15 class for Virginia Tech. It's going to only continue to climb as Franklin recruits make their commitments in the Class of 2027.

On Monday, Virginia Tech picked up a commitment from offensive lineman Kaden Buchanan from Tennessee. It came down to three schools: Kentucky, North Carolina State, and the Hokies. When the dust settled, he picked Virginia Tech, and he knew right away what his decision was going to be.

Virginia Tech commit Kaden Buchanan knew right away where he wanted to be

After he committed, he explained why it was Virginia Tech.

"I ultimately knew that Virginia Tech was where I wanted to be ever since I stepped on campus there, just the overall feeling that I got there was unlike anywhere else,” said Buchanan.

Franklin and Virginia Tech have been building a solid class on both sides of the ball. On the defensive side, new defensive line coach Sean Spencer has been getting some key pieces added in the trenches, while some help in the secondary. As far as the offensive side of the ball goes, the Hokies have a four-star quarterback in Peter Bourque committed, as well as some running backs and wide receivers. They have a tight end from Alabama committed.

As far as the trenches go for offensive line coach Matt Moore, it has been quiet on that front until Buchanan committed. His commitment drew some reactions on social media from Bourque and running back commit Javion Jones-Priest.

That comment is likely going to be a sentiment that is said by other recruits. There is still another month's worth of visits scheduled, as well as some commitments that will be coming down the line, all the way into the summer. The 2026 season is creeping closer with each passing day, and the Class of 2027 recruiting is booming. The James Franklin effect is something that is alive and well in Blacksburg right now.
