James Franklin is already taking Virginia Tech to places fans could only once dream of

Hokies fans have been waiting a long time to be on a list like this.

When Michigan fired Sherrone Moore back in December, that opened the door for the Class of 2026 and 2027 commits to reconsider their commitments in Ann Arbor. When it came to several players, some de-committed from the Wolverines, and one of them was four-star quarterback Peter Bourque in the Class of 2027.

As soon as he reopened his commitment, some of the top programs got in the mix for him. One of those teams was Virginia Tech, and James Franklin. That came just a couple of weeks after Franklin was hired in Blacksburg.

You knew that Franklin was hired, that strides were going to be made in recruiting, and Bourque de-committing was going to test Franklin's recruiting early in Blacksburg. As soon as they could, Franklin and quarterbacks coach Danny O'Brien went after Bourque and, after months of recruiting him, landed him in a commitment over Georgia and Penn State.

Virginia Tech is landing Peter Bourque is something that fans could only dream of happening

Rivals dropped the biggest flips so far in the Class of 2027 cycle, and on the list was Bourque to the Hokies, according to Hunter Shelton.

"James Franklin and Danny O'Brien were after Bourque while they were at Penn State, and they re-kicked the tires after settling in with the Hokies. The blue-chipper ultimately picked VT over Georgia on May 14. He’s the top-ranked commit in a class that ranks inside the top 20 of the Rivals Industry Team Recruiting Rankings,'' wrote Shelton.

So here's the thing: just a year ago at this time, Virginia Tech fans would only dream about being on a list like this, flipping one of the top recruits in a cycle. That's not a knock on Brent Pry or his staff, but the cold, hard truth is that Virginia Tech is in a new era in terms of recruiting.

Bourque is one of the top signal callers to commit to Virginia Tech out of high school since Michael Vick. There is a lot to like about Bourque and his future in Blacksburg, but if there is any other case to be made that times are changing around the Hokies program, landing on a flip list in terms of getting a commitment from a highly-ranked player from another Power 4 Conference school has been a fan's dream for years.
