This isn't surprising.

The first spring practice for James Franklin at Virginia Tech is in the books. It's hard to believe that it's been five months since he was hired in Blacksburg after being fired at Penn State.

Franklin hit the ground running in terms of recruiting, building the roster, and adding to his staff. However, you can't put into words how big the last couple of months were in terms of practices and workouts for a team that needs to come together quickly.

The results from the spring game were good, and it's now time to turn to recruiting before the summer hits, and before you know it, it'll be time for fall camp. Despite the spring being done in terms of work on the field, Franklin wasn't shy about where the Hokies need to improve before they host VMI on Labor Day Weekend in Blacksburg.

After the spring game that began with a scare when a skydiver got stuck on the scoreboard, Franklin was honest about where his team needs to improve going into the fall.

"Everything. We have made tremendous progress in a short period of time, but we still have to improve, really, in every area. When you talk about having high expectations and standards, which we do, that will never change. But this is just the start. We laid a foundation in the spring,'' said Franklin.

Yes, the foundation was laid, and there are likely areas where they need to improve. However, there is a lot of coach talk in there. It's that time of the year, there needs to be improvement everywhere. Things should be a lot more polished by the time the season rolls around, and it is setting up to be an exciting season in Blacksburg.

Health is going to be important and there were some players banged up in the spring game, but here's hoping that it's nothing serious with any players.
