A third of the way through the 2026 season, injuries are building for the Virginia Tech football team along the offensive line. First-year head coach James Franklin and offensive line coach Matt Moore have had to move people around and make adjustments on the fly.
That was the case leading into last weekend's battle at Boston College. There was a lot of moving around, and Montavious Cunningham missed the game after suffering an injury last week, but at his weekly press conference on Monday, Franklin sounded like someone who was fairly confident that he might be getting some injured players back against Pittsburgh on Friday night.
James Franklin gives injury updates ahead of Pitt showdown
The week before the BC game, the Hokies lost Justin Terry to an injury against Maryland, and he missed the game in Chestnut Hill and was replaced by Oklahoma transfer Logan Howland. Unfortunately, on Monday, Franklin said that Terry is going to be out for several weeks with his injury, per Andy Bitter of Tech Sideline.
However, there was slightly better news when it came to Cunningham. The Georgia State transfer missed the game, but Franklin is expecting to have him back when the Panthers visit on Friday night. If that is the case, then it would be a big development against a stout Pitt defensive line.
Another key player who missed the Boston College game was wide receiver Ayden Greene. Marlion Jackson filled in for him and hauled in a big fourth-quarter touchdown pass from quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer that tied the game after Jeffrey Overton Jr.'s two-point conversion run. Greene is one of the top receivers for offensive coordinator Ty Howle, and Franklin is also anticipating him to be back on Friday night, per Bitter.
Now, there are still four days until the kickoff time against Pitt approaches, and things can certainly change. However, it would be a big lift if the Hokies could get back either Cunningham or Greene, or even both of them, in a battle between two undefeated teams.
