Halfway through May means we're a month clear of the Virginia Tech football spring game. It also means that we are in the heart of the recruiting schedule for the Class of 2027. Recruiting hit heavy in March and April, and the commitments have been rolling in.

One school that is seeing a spike in commitments has been Virginia Tech under first-year coach James Franklin. When he was hired to replace Brent Pry as head coach in Blacksburg, you knew there were going to be some changes that would happen, and you figured that recruiting would be near the top of the list. That has been the case.

Franklin is building a solid Class of 2027 for the Hokies, and there are more commitment announcements on tap in the coming days and weeks. Then, in late May and throughout most of June, there are going to be several players making commitments. After beginning to add commitments on the defensive side of the ball, Virginia Tech has seen a heater on the offensive side of the ball.

Virginia Tech joins select company in May recruiting

Looking back at the previous two tenures as head coach at Virginia Tech with Justin Fuente and Brent Pry, it can't be denied that recruiting took a major hit compared to other schools. The Hokies were not getting, or heck, they were not even in on some of the bigger recruits in the country. Now, there can be several factors for that, including declining relationships within the Commonwealth with high school coaches or Virginia Tech not being able to compete on an NIL level. Take your pick, but once NIL became a factor, Virginia Tech became less of a recruiting factor.

Under James Franklin, that is changing and changing quickly.

A little more than halfway through the month of May, and Franklin has been booming with commitments. Last Thursday, he picked up a commitment from former Michigan commit, four-star quarterback Peter Bourque. He picked the Hokies over Penn State and Georgia. It's not too often that Virginia Tech football wins a recruiting battle with the likes of Penn State and Georgia. The James Franklin effect.

According to 247Sports, Virginia Tech has joined a select company halfway through May when it comes to landing a commitment from some of the top recruits in the Class of 2027. Just how good is the company? Check out the tweet below.

After landing Bourque, it's safe to say that Franklin has hit the ground running in recruiting. That was evident when he officially hired when he plucked nearly a dozen Penn State commits to Virginia Tech in the Class of 2026. He then did even more plucking from State College in the Transfer Portal.

More announcements are coming before the end of May, and one is expected on Tuesday with four-star running back Javion Jones-Priest. Virginia Tech is in the mix and maybe considered a favorite for him. However, you knew eventually that Franklin was getting recruiting booming at Virginia Tech, and it's going to take a little over six months. Buckle up.
