When Virginia Tech hired James Franklin as their next football coach, things were about to change in Blacksburg. They were about to change for several reasons, but maybe the biggest was going to surround recruiting.
At Penn State, Franklin had a lot of success in recruiting and turning a handful of them into NFL players. He was in on a lot of four and five-star recruits that Virginia Tech was never in on. He was going into the DMV, mainly Virginia, and plucking recrits right out from under the Hokies.
Now that he is in Blacksburg, the recruiting landscape is changing for the Hokies, and that latest evidence of that is with the Hokies making the Final 3 for an elite four-star defensive lineman.
Virginia Tech is a finalist for elite four-star Class of 2027 DL
Class of 2027 elite four-star defensive lineman Ezekiel Ayangbile is down to three schools, with Virginia Tech, Miami, and LSU making the cut. That puts Franklin up against Mario Cristobal and the Hurricanes and Lane Kiffin and the Tigers. How many times has Virginia Tech been a finalist for a recruit with Miami and LSU?
As for Ayangbile, he is reportedly about to make a decision soon, according to Rivals. He took a visit to Blacksburg earlier this year and is a legacy prospect for the Hokies, with several family members being Virginia Tech graduates.
The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Houston, Texas native plays at Langham Creek High School. Miami is seen as a leader for him according to Rivals predictions, but never say never for Franklin and Virginia Tech. New defensive line coach Sean Spencer has got a handful of commitments already along the defensive line, and it wouldn't be surprising if he were able to get Ayangbile. We should find out soon enough what his decision is.
