When the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team was left out of the NCAA Tournament field on Sunday night, it left them as the top seed for the WBIT. Many schools tend to back out and not play in the postseason tournament, but that’s not the case for Megan Duffy and her team.

Duffy is welcoming the opportunity to play more games with open arms and why not? She has a young team that can gain valuable experience for the future (assuming they all stay in Blacksburg and don’t hit the portal). Having the chance to play at home in front of their own fans is also a great opportunity.

“Would we love to be dancing in our first year? Absolutely, but I think there’s some great value and momentum and to continue to be able to practice with your team and get some game experience in March.”

The WBIT can be used like the NCAA Tournament as a springboard for next season. Virginia Tech has an opportunity to do some damage in the tournament, but in order to do that, they’ll need to avoid what happened too many times in February, losing to teams that they shouldn’t and staying connected on both ends of the floor.

Date: Thursday, March 20
Time: 6 p.m.
Venue: Cassell Coliseum
How to Watch: ESPN+
Virginia Tech Record: 18-12
North Carolina A&T Record: 19-13

It’s going to be 14 days in between games for the Hokies since they last took the floor on March 6 in Greensboro in the second round of the ACC Tournament in a 72-57 loss to Georgia Tech. Virginia Tech’s normal starting five of Carleigh Wenzel, Matilda Ekh, Carys Baker, Lani White, and Rose Micheaux are expected to start against the Aggies.
