How Many Virginia Tech Football Players to Expect to Enter the Transfer Portal
By Scott Roche
The 2024 college football regular season is over, and the conference championship games are this weekend. On Monday, the transfer portal officially opens for players to enter, and across the sport, some players have already announced their intentions to enter the portal.
Currently, three Virginia Tech players, all defensive linemen, have announced their intentions to enter the portal. With some players exhausting their eligibility and three entering the portal, the defensive line will be a priority for the Hokies coaches through the portal. Friday night, redshirt wide receiver Jordan Tapscott announced he'll be entering the portal also.
How many Virginia Tech players will enter the portal?
Last season, head coach Brent Pry and his staff had a ton of retainment with just a few players going out the door for other programs. This season, however, feels like it’s going to be different and we’ll see more than the three that have already announced their leaving and more to follow. Over the last month, Pry has been in retainment mode for 2025.
In November during their second bye week, Pry and his staff along with some players went into retainment mode in their locker room by recruiting players to stay, which in the overall big picture is somewhat concerning given we were fed how great the culture was the last year and how it played a big role in last season’s retainment.
Wednesday Pry said that he hopes there are no changes with his coaching staff for 2025 and depending on who you talk to, that statement got mixed results after a disappointing 6-6 season. The good news is that on Signing Day, they didn’t lose any commits on flips late and they were even able to flip Jahmari DeLoatch from Cincinnati at the last second. However, with the players inside the building, it remains to be seen who is going to stick it out for 2025 and who will move on. Expect more players to enter once the portal officially opens and it wouldn't be surprising to see the number reach near a dozen.
