After firing Brent Pry on Sept. 14, the Virginia Tech football team went out and beat an overmatched FCS Wofford team last Saturday at Lane Stadium, 38-6, for its first win of the season. Interim Philip Montgomery had them prepared and ready to play.

Now the big question this week was, could Montgomery and his staff have his team ready to go in their ACC opener on the road at North Carolina State? Nearly a double-digit underdog at kickoff, the Hokies have hung around and clawed their way to a 13-7 halftime lead.

Virginia Tech looks prepared to play NC State

You never want to beat some who is down, but through the first three weeks of the season, Virginia Tech looked like a team that wasn't prepared and just going through the motions at times. Whether it was on offense or defense, there were more questions than answers.

Against NC State, the Hokies for 30 minutes look like a team that was prepared and playing very loose as a group. Both sides of the ball have looked ready to go and execute. Defensively, they have bent a few times against a talented Wolfpack offense, but not broken, yet against C.J. Bailey. They stopped NC State on a fourth-and-short in the second quarter.

Offensively, quarterback Kyron Drones has made some good decisions for the most part and made a beautiful throw to Ayden Greene down the Wolfpack sideline in the second quarter to set up a second John Love field goal. Virginia Tech's touchdown was a pass to Marcellous Hawkins in the second quarter for a 10-7 lead.

Say what you will about what the roster looks like, but you can't say that Virginia Tech hasn't looked better the last couple of weeks and more prepared.
