Coming out of high school, Xayvion Turner-Bradshaw was the No. 20-ranked player in the state of Virginia at Graham High School in Bluefield. He was a very good addition in the Class of 2022. He came to the Hokies as a wide receiver with some experience in high school on the defensive side of the ball.

Turner-Bradshaw played a couple of seasons in Blacksburg with very limited touches on offense. In 2023, he had one reception for nine yards, while recording four rushes for 73 yards, including a long of 47 yards in a 35-28 loss to North Carolina State that season at home. He had one carry for 14 yards in a 41-20 Military Bowl blowout win over Tulane. However, like so many other players in the current state of college football and sports, Turner-Bradshaw hit the Transfer Portal and left, landing in the Sun Belt Conference at Marshall.

He has been a nice addition to the Thundering Herd, and on Saturday, he returned to the Commonwealth with his teammates for a showdown with Old Dominion in Norfolk. He had a game that he won't forget for a very, very long time.

Trailing 20-10 on the final play of the first half, the Monarchs lined up for a long field goal to try to cut the deficit to seven points going into the break. Marshall dropped Turner-Bradshaw into the end zone, knowing that the kick could end up coming up short, which it did. The kick fell short of the uprights and into the arms of Turner-Bradshaw. With nothing to lose and the clock reading triple zeroes, Turner-Bradshaw ran the ball out of the end zone.

He did what kids dream of growing up at every level of football; he returned the kick 100 yards for a touchdown to give the Thundering Hurd a commanding 27-10 lead at the break on their way to a 36-23 victory to improve to 5-3 and move within a game of becoming bowl-eligible.

"Plays like that rarely happen, but we work on it every Thursday," Turner-Bradshaw said, per Marshall's football homepage. "It was great to see it translate to the game."

This season for Marshall, Turner-Bradshaw has 372 receiving yards on 26 catches and four touchdowns, while averaging 14.3 yards per catch. He is in his second season with the Thundering Hurd, but having a 100-yard missed field-goal-kick return for a touchdown is something that will be remembered for a long time. Practice makes perfect.

When Turner-Bradshaw was at Virginia Tech, there were glimpses of what he could be with his speed. The pieces were there for him to be a playmaker, and he had his one big moment against NC State three years ago. Now, he had another moment, and this one even bigger for Marshall, with his electric final play of the opening half. Players make plays, and Turner-Bradshaw can make plays when given the opportunity.
