Now that the 2024 college football regular season is over, it’s still going to be a very busy month of December. The early-signing period is this week and then the transfer portal officially opens on Dec. 9. Again, it “officially opens on Dec. 9,” but that doesn’t mean that player's intention to enter the portal won’t be made.

Despite the end of the regular season being just two days old, several players have already made it clear that they are going to enter the transfer portal. One former Virginia Tech wide receiver is going to enter the portal for one more year of college football.

Da’Wain Lofton to enter transfer portal

Former Hokies wide receiver Da’Wain Lofton will enter the transfer portal after just one season at Oklahoma State for the Cowboys. Injuries played a big part in his 2024 campaign in Stillwater and he didn’t get onto the field until mid-season.

The 5-foot-11, 190-point Fort Worth, Texas native had six receptions this season for Oklahoma State and 140 yards. His longest reception went for 56 yards in an Oct. 26, 38-28, loss to Baylor and it was his only catch of the game.

Before arriving at Oklahoma State, Lofton played three seasons for Virginia Tech. In 2021, he had seven receptions for 98 yards and a touchdown before having his best season in 2022 with 22 catches for 254 yards and a pair of touchdowns. In 2023 for the Hokies, he had six catches for 58 yards.

At Virginia Tech, he saw the writing on the wall when four wide receivers, Jaylin Lane, Da’Quan Felton, Stephen Gosnell, and Ali Jennings all announced last December that they were returning for 2024 to give Brent Pry a deep room. Lofton knew that catches were going to be few and far between. Here’s hoping that he ends up at a program and is able to be a big part of their offense next season.
