As we come to the end of October, teams are starting to sort themselves out for a potential berth in the new 12-team College Football Playoff. This season, there will be several non-power conference teams fighting for the 12th seed. Several teams could be considered in the conversation for that spot, but thanks to one former Virginia Tech wide receiver, one team can be crossed off the list.

Former Virginia Tech WR Christian Moss is part of historic upset

Things have been off to a rough start this season for Kennesaw State University as they entered Wednesday night’s Conference USA matchup at home against undefeated Liberty at 0-6. On paper, it looked like it was going to be a night where the Flames would roll to another win, but the Owls and former Virginia Tech wide receiver Christian Moss had other ideas.

Kennesaw State picked up their first-ever FBS victory stunning the previously undefeated Flames, 27-24, at home. Moss hauled in a 41-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter and finished the game with 56 receiving yards on two catches. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound former Hokie has 10 catches this season for 125 yards.

Moss played one season in Blacksburg in 2022 and had six catches for 71 yards. The Kennesaw, Georgia native, and his Owls’ teammates snapped Liberty’s 17-game winning streak which was the longest active streak in the country.

This loss opens the door wider for Boise State and UNLV from the Mountain West Conference when it comes to the CFP in December. This wasn’t Liberty’s first close call of the 2024 season as they survived New Mexico State back in September to win, 30-24, but they were not able to avoid an upset at the hands of Kennesaw State on a historic night in Georgia.
