After the 2026 NFL Draft was complete in Pittsburgh on the last weekend in April, NFL teams stocked up on depth players with mini-camps coming up this month. Virginia Tech didn't have any players in the draft this season, the second time it has happened in three years.
After the draft, one former Hokies player, quarterback Kyron Drones, was signed by the Green Bay Packers to an undrafted free agent contract. That is a good landing spot for him, as there is a chance that the Packers could use him in other situations other than a QB.
Drones will not be the only former Virginia Tech quarterback heading to Green Bay next season. According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, former Hokies signal-caller Tyrod Taylor is signing a deal to be the backup for the 2026 season.

The 36-year-old Taylor has carved out a nice career as a backup in the NFL, and he was brought into Green Bay to back up Jordan Love. During his time in the NFL, Taylor has played for the Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans, New York Giants, and New York Jets.
He spent the last two years with the Jets, playing in eight games, completing 97 of 156 passes for 898 yards and eight touchdowns. He threw for 172 yards and 19-for-33, and a touchdown in a 27-24 win over the Atlanta Falcons on Nov. 30.
Taylor is being brought in to back up Love after Malik Willis left in free agency for the Miami Dolphins. Willis spent the last two seasons with the Packers. Taylor, a sixth-round draft pick of the Ravens in the 2011 NFL Draft, is 29-31-1 as an NFL starter.
