The news cycle to sweep through Virginia Tech fans on Sunday came before the 1 o'clock NFL games even kicked off when news broke that Brent Pry was being fired as football coach in Blacksburg. Then, when the NFL games kicked off, it was a big weekend for some former Hokies in both wins and losses.

Parker Romo kicks Falcons to win over Vikings

Late Saturday afternoon, former Virginia Tech kicker Parker Romo was promoted by the Atlanta Falcons after kicker Younghoe Koo didn't travel with the team to Minnesota to play the Vikings because of an injury on Sunday night football. Romo made the most of his chance to kick.

Romo went 5-for-5 on field goals in Atlanta's 22-6 win, connecting from 38, 29, 33, 54, and 33 along with an extra point with 3:22 left after a Tyler Allgeier touchdown to seal the win. After the game, Romo had a hilarious quote on NBC. He was named Player of the Game with Leonard Floyd, but he had no idea who Floyd, a teammate, was.

"Nice to meet you,'' said Romo on the broadcast.

Bhayshul Tuten scores first touchdown

In Jacksonville's 31-27 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, former Hokies running back Bhayshul Tuten had two catches for 32 yards and his first NFL touchdown, while rushing for 42 yards on eight carries. He continues to impress early in his rookie season with the Jaguars after having a good training camp.

Other Virginia Tech NFL nuggets

  • In Buffalo's 30-10 AFC East win over the New York Jets, Dorian Strong and Keonta Jenkins each had two tackles for the Bills defensively. On the other side, quarterback Tyrod Taylor had three carries for 21 yards.
  • The Detroit Lions blew out the Chicago Bears, 52-21, in their home opener, and despite being blown out, Tremaine Edwards had seven tackles for the Bears.
