Frustration is building inside and outside of the Virginia Tech football program. With a ton of expectations going into the 2024 season high with talk about them being a dark horse for the new 12-team College Football Playoff, the season is spiraling out of control.

After a 31-28 loss at Duke on Saturday night, the Hokies sit at 5-6 heading into the Commonwealth Cup on Thanksgiving Weekend at home against Virginia. Instead of playing for a potential at-large berth in the CFP or playing for a big bowl game, Brent Pry's team is playing just to become bowl-eligible. Not something anyone imagined when the season began Labor Day Weekend at Vanderbilt.

After losing to the Blue Devils, the reaction from Hokies fans was as expected, extremely frustrated and angry. One former Virginia Tech offensive lineman took to social media to voice his frustration on where the program is headed in Year 3 of Pry and his staff.

After another loss in 2024 in a frustrating fashion, former Virginia Tech offensive lineman Sergio Render took to his X account to voice his frustration and concern about where the Hokies are going after a very disappointing season with so much hype.

He's not wrong. Beating Virginia on Thanksgiving Weekend to become bowl-eligible is becoming tiring. It's even more tiring in a season where the Hokies have a loaded roster and despite injuries, they are looking at the real possibility of not having their season extended beyond the Cavaliers.

What should make Virginia Tech fans more upset is that SMU comes into the ACC in their first season and they are sitting as the only undefeated team in the conference and in the ACC Championship Game. With the schedule this season and the returning talent and transfer portal additions they had, there is no way that Virginia Tech should be in this position.

Pry will tell you that getting to a bowl game is good for the program and the future with the extra practice and game they get, but Render is right, Virginia being the Super Bowl of every season is not the direction the program should be heading right now.
