When the University of Michigan fired football coach Sherrone Moore back in December, it left a lot of questions surrounding the recruiting classes that Moore had lined up. In the Class of 2027, Michigan picked up a commitment from quarterback Peter Bourque from Massachusetts.

Bourque is the No. 8-rated QB in his class and the 91st-ranked prospect in Rivals Industry rankings. On Tuesday night, he de-committed from Michigan to reopen his recruiting. He committed to Moore in August ahead of his junior year, but after the coaching change, he has decided to take a look at more options. One of those options is Virginia Tech.

Virginia Tech has has new Class of 2027 QB target in Peter Bourque

Bourque is going to have a lot of suitors for him, and this feels like a recruitment that will take some time. Why did he de-commit from the Wolverines and new coach Kyle Whittingham?

"I want to make sure I’m making the best decision,'' Bourque told Rivals.

A four-star, the 6-foot-4, 195-pound Hingham, Mass. native told Rivals that aside from James Franklin and Virginia Tech, Bourque has heard from Penn State and Matt Campbell, North Carolina and Bill Belichick, Florida, and Georgia. Those are some powerhouse programs, including three with new coaches.

It has been stated multiple times, but Franklin and quarterback coach Danny O'Brien are going to have a young quarterback room in 2026. In this day and age, with the Transfer Portal, everything goes on a year-to-year basis. However, you can never have enough quarterbacks competing for jobs. Competition brings out the best in everyone.

It will be interesting to see how O'Brien, Franklin, and Virginia Tech play this one out. There is no doubt that Bourque is one of the top signal callers in his class, and whoever lands him will be getting a good one. Just another top commit that Virginia Tech is in the mix for under Franklin.
