When James Franklin was at Penn State, he had a lot of success recruiting and was able to land a lot of four-star recruits. After being hired at Virginia Tech in mid-November, he hit the ground running in terms of recruiting and flipped a lot of the Class of 2026 committed to State College to Blacksburg.
He also flipped some recruits from other conferences and had already built a Top 25 class. As far as the Class of 2027 goes, he is once again returning to his Penn State roots to begin building a class. Last week, he reportedly hired Danny O'Brien, his quarterback coach with the Nittany Lions at Virginia Tech, and like his boss, he's hitting the ground running.
Michigan dropped a major bombshell last week when it fired head coach Sherrone Moore abruptly. It didn't take long for O'Brien to make a move on one of the Wolverines commits in the Class of 2027 before a new coach is hired in Ann Arbor.
Virginia Tech & Penn State attempting to flip four-star Michigan QB recruit
According to Steve Wiltfong of On3/Rivals, Virginia Tech and Penn State are both attempting to flip four-star Class of 2027 Michigan quarterback commit Peter Bourque. He plays at Tabor Academy in Rochester, Massachusetts, and committed to Michigan on Aug. 11 before the 2025 season.

During his recruitment, Penn State finished as the runner-up for Bourque, and O'Brien quickly extended an offer as soon as he landed at Virginia Tech. New Nittany Lions coach Matt Campbell has also extended an offer from Penn State. The 6-foot-4, 195-pound Hingham, Massachusetts native is a four-star across the board.

There is a long way to go before Bourque decides on his future, and he could wait to see who is hired next at Michigan. However, one thing is for sure: Franklin and Virginia Tech are in the picture to make a big move down the line.
