When the Transfer Portal opened, new Virginia Tech football coach James Franklin hit the ground running. The former Penn State coach brought several former Nittany Lions players to Blacksburg with him through the portal.

On the defensive side, he struck gold with Baylor edge Kamauryn Morgan. One of the top players in the portal, getting a commitment from him was huge for a defensive line that is looking to be much better next season under the new staff on that side of the ball.

However, after Morgan committed, there was an academic issue that caused him to de-commit. The issue apparently stemmed from a grade he received while at Baylor in the fall. He appealed the grade and won, which now makes him academically eligible. Now that he is cleared to play, he is looking to commit soon, and you would have to think that James Franklin and Virginia Tech get right back in the mix for him.

Former Virginia Tech portal commit now academically eligible

Now that the academic side of things has been cleared, it is going to be a race to get a commitment from him. According to Chris Hummer of 247Sports/CBS Sports, SEC and Big Ten schools are entering the mix for Morgan. That's not surprising, as he is the best available player in the portal.

However, Franklin and Virginia Tech should be contacting him again right now. He would be a tremendous addition to the Hokies' defensive line in 2026 for new coach Sean Spencer. The 6-foot-5, 251-pound Morgan, who hails from Dallas, played over 100 snaps as a freshman in 2025 with six tackles and six QB hurries.

According to 247Sports, Morgan is the lone four-star recruit remaining in the Transfer Portal, and you can understand why he wants to make a quick commitment. Spring practices are right around the corner, and off-field workouts have begun. This is going to happen quickly.
