Since the Transfer Portal opened two weeks ago, James Franklin has been loading up with former players from Penn State as well as players from other programs. Along with having a Top 25 Class of 2026 signed in Blacksburg, he has brought in some young and talented portal players.

Franklin has been loading up on both sides of the ball for his two new coordinators, who are going to be Brent Pry on the defensive side again, like he was at Penn State. And yes, it's the same Brent Pry that was fired as head coach of the Hokies back in September.

Virginia Tech recently picked up a commitment from Baylor edge Kamauryn Morgan, one of the top players in the portal at his position, but on Friday afternoon, Chris Hummer of 247Sports and CBS Sports reported that Morgan was reopening his recruitment and would not attend Virginia Tech.

Kolby Crawford of VTScoop confirmed that Morgan has reopened his recruitment, and he reported what sources told him. He reported that the decision by Morgan was tied to issues related to enrollment through the admissions process, rather than anything football-related. Those complications ultimately prevented Morgan from moving forward with Virginia Tech as classes start on Jan. 22.

This is a big loss for the Hokies. Morgan was a four-star recruit when he signed with the Bears in Waco. He was a Class of 2025 recruit and played in 10 games this year for Baylor and logged over 100 snaps.

While this is a blow for Virginia Tech, there is time for Franklin, Pry, and defensive line coach Sean Spencer to pivot elsewhere in the portal if they want to add another edge. Spencer is going to make a huge impact next season with the defensive line, which is going to have a mixture of veterans and some promising young players.
