When former Virginia Tech head football coach Brent Pry fired three assistant coaches in December of 2024 after a disappointing 6-6 season, one of those fired was defensive coordinator Chris Marve. His defense underperformed during the season, and it came as little surprise that he was let go.

After spending the 2025 season out of the game, he was hired at the University of Colorado by head coach Deion Sanders to be the Buffaloes linebacker's coach. It wasn't surprising that he found his way back into the game and with another position. However, his job title changed on Wednesday after Sanders and Colorado lost a key member of their staff.

Former Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Chris Marve promoted to DC at Colorado

Early on Wednesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that the Denver Broncos were hiring Colorado defensive coordinator Robert Livingston as Denver's pass game coordinator. That moves reunites him with Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, who Livingston worked with when they were with the Cincinnati Bengals.

That move left an opening at a key position for Sanders with spring practice about to get underway in what is a pivotal season for Snades in Boulder. Scott Proctor of DNVR Buffs reported that Marve was being promoted to defensive coordinator. He held that position under Pry at Virginia Tech from 2022-24. In his last season, it was a stuggle at times for the Hokies on that side of the ball as they gave up a lot of big-plays in games. That all started in Week 1 with an overtime loss to Vanderbilt and quarterback Diego Pavia in overtime. Virginia Tech struggled with Pavia and it became an issue as the season went along.

Marve was replaced last season by Sam Siefkes at Virginia Tech, but his time in Blacksburg last one season. After Pry was fired in Week 3, James Franklin was hired at Virginia Tech in November after being fired at Penn State and he is bringing back Pry to be his DC like he was with the Nittany Lions.
