On Sunday, Virginia Tech made the move that many fans were calling and hoping for after their latest loss, a brutal 45-26 decision to Old Dominion on Saturday night, firing head football coach Brent Pry. It was a move that had to be made.
Now, as for looking ahead to the future, Virginia Tech named offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery the interim head coach, not J.C. Price, who held the position after Justin Fuente was fired four years ago, and he comes with some head coaching experience. At 0-3, Montgomery will be tasked with keeping things together and hoping to turn things around in the final nine games.
The Transfer Portal window opens for 30 days for Virginia Tech players who have the chance to redshirt this year and look for a new home in 2026. The search for a new head coach will begin in time, but one college football writer had an ominous take about the future of the program in Blacksburg and a possible replacement.
David Hale has a concerning take on the future of the Hokies program and hiring of a coach
David Hale of ESPN reported shortly after the firing of Pry was confirmed that the program was in a better place when the former Penn State defensive coordinator was hired four years ago than it is now, and that more changes, other than Pry's firing, need to be made to get an experienced head coach in Blacksburg.
The last time VT was hiring - and it was in a better place then - numerous candidates turned it down. From multiple sources I’ve talked to, if Hokies want to land someone good (and with prior HC experience) there will almost certainly need to be serious changes beyond Pry.

There is no doubt that this is a critical time for the program beyond the head coach. Athletic director Whit Babcock has come under fire recently as well, with Pry, and last month, he gave a sombering outlook to the Virginia Tech board that shows just how far behind the program is compared to other Power 4 schools.
This hire has to be the correct hire after the last two failures, but Hale's report is something that can't be overlooked, and it would be surprising if there aren't more moves coming out of Blacksburg in the not-too-distant future.
