The college football season gets underway in less than a week, with Week 0 games kicking off on Aug. 29. Virginia Tech fans will have to wait until Sept. 5 for James Franklin's Hokies' debut at home against VMI.
It appears that most college rosters are set, but that could change, given that court rulings are allowing some players who have already signed NFL contracts and are in camps to hit the Transfer Portal if they are released at the end of camp. One player who is reportedly hitting the portal if the opportunity comes is former Virginia Tech tight end Dae'Quan Wright.
He has been in camp with the Cleveland Browns, but after their loss to the Buffalo Bills on Saturday afternoon, head coach Todd Monken didn't mince words when asked about Wright and returning to college.
Browns coach Todd Monken rips former Virginia Tech TE Dae'Quan Felton
“Man, isn’t this s**t crazy?” Monken said. “I don’t even know what to say. As far as I know, he’s had a medical issue that wasn’t allowing him to practice. That’s a medical issue. It has nothing to do with me. He was cleared, so we dressed him just in case we had to have him.
“I don’t know what to say. I wondered why Lane Kiffin reached out to me a week ago, now I know. I didn’t call him back; I guess I should have.”
Monken is referring to LSU head coach Lane Kiffin, who recruited Wright to Ole Miss in the Transfer Portal a couple of years ago when he left Blacksburg. He had a very good stint in Oxford and helped the Rebels reach the semifinals of the College Football Playoff last year before losing to Miami.
What is even more bizarre is that Wright suited up for Saturday's game against Buffalo, but didn't play. He clearly is a long shot at best to make the Browns' 53-man roster after cuts. Monken didn't sound like someone who plans on keeping Wright, who went undrafted in April's draft before signing with Cleveland. This is just the latest example of where things are heading for college football, and in the overall big picture, it's just not great if we're being honest.
