Going into the first day of the MLB Draft on Saturday in Philadelphia, there was a chance that Virginia Tech pitcher Brent Renfrow was going to hear his name called. It was just a matter of whether he would hear it called on Saturday or Sunday.
As it turns out, he heard his name called on Saturday, and he didn't need to wait long to hear his name called. He was a late-second-round pick by the Minnesota Twins, No. 74 overall. He becomes the seventh-highest pitcher selected from Virginia Tech all-time during the MLB Draft.

The Manassas, Virginia, native was a workhorse for the Hokies during his time in Blacksburg under head coach John Szefc. He stepped in as a freshman in 2024 and went 6-4 with a 4.92 ERA in 15 appearances in 75 innings. He struck 78 batters.
As a sophomore, he struggled, as did the Hokies. He was just 3-7 with a 3.89 ERA in 15 appearances that covered 74 innings. He saw his strikeout numbers go up to 84, and he nearly cut his home runs allowed in half, giving up just seven after 13 in his rookie season.
He returned for his junior year and was a huge part of Virginia Tech's success that saw them end up in the NCAA Tournament in the Los Angeles Regional. He went 5-4 with a 4.64 ERA in his final season in a Hokies uniform, in, you guessed it, 15 appearances. He fanned a career-high 88 in 73.2 innings and dropped his walks down to just 25.
His final start for Virginia Tech was in an elimination game against top-seeded UCLA on May 30 in Southern California. He worked four innings after 16 days off, allowing five hits and two runs in what turned into a season-ending loss for Virginia Tech, 6-5.
