We have less than two months until the 2026 college football season officially kicks off with Week 0 the weekend before Labor Day. Then, the season begins in earnest on Labor Day Weekend with a full schedule that begins as early as Thursday night. As far as Virginia Tech goes, the James Franklin era will begin on Sept. when VMI visits Lane Stadium.
As far as future schedules go, some non-conference games are set well in advance, and earlier this week, Virginia Tech announced that it will open the 2027 season on Labor Day Weekend at home against The Citadel. Andy Bitter of Tech Sideline reported that the Hokies will pay The Citadel $500 for their trip to Blacksburg to begin the season.
Tobi Lawal's first Summer League game is in the books
Former Virginia Tech forward Tobi Lawal was picked in the second round, 48th overall, by the Dallas Mavericks in the 2026 NBA Draft last month in Brooklyn. He kicked off his NBA Summer League schedule on Thursday night for Dallas against the Golden State Warriors and fell, 101-90, in Las Vegas.
Lawal started, and in 14 minutes, he had five points, four rebounds, and a block for the Mavericks. Dallas returns to the court for their second game on Saturday at 10 p.m. against the Los Angeles Lakers on ESPN.
MLB Draft this weekend
Just over two weeks after the NBA Draft was in the and Virginia Tech fans saw Lawal drafted, the 2026 MLB Draft kicks off on Saturday in Philadelphia ahead of this week's All-Star Game. Rounds 1-4 will be spread out over six hours, beginning at 1 o'clock. On Sunday, as MLB teams are wrapping up their first-half schedules, the final 15 rounds will be from 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Some Virginia Tech players should hear their names called this weekend, including pitcher Brent Renfrow. It might come until Day 2, but it would be surprising to see his name called right before the first day ends on Saturday night.
