As we hit Memorial Day Weekend, the offseason for Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry is heating up off the field in terms of a very big upcoming moth of recruiting. After that, all eyes are going to turn to what is a huge 2025 season for Pry in terms of his future in Blacksburg.

With three-plus months left until the 2025 season kicks off for the Hokies on Aug. 31 in Atlanta against South Carolina, ACC coaches gave some opinions on their fellow conference programs and it should come as a surprise that Pry and Kyron Drones were the subject of most comments.

ACC coaches praise Brent Pry and have mixed results on Kyron Drones

When it came to discussing the Hokies, it's no surprise that most of it centered around Brent Pry, but also quarterback Kyron Drones. As for Pry, his fellow coaches spoke anonymously to Athlon Sports and think he's doing some good things in Blacksburg.

“The consensus around the league is, it’s not what they want it to be in Blacksburg, and it’s harder than it ever was, but if you get the right guy in there, you’re gonna roll. The question is can that be [Brent] Pry? Because he’s the most Virginia Tech guy they could have.”

When it comes to the roster, one coach thinks that the roster is better than what Pry had with when he took over for Justin Fuente and improvements are being made.

“They have some really nice pieces, especially at the skill positions, compared to what Pry inherited.”

“They’re making a lot of slow improvements.”

As for Drones, one coach believes that first-year offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery will simplify things for the Baylor transfer, who is coming off multiple injuries that cut his 2024 season short and spring practices as well.

“[Kyron] Drones is wildly different game to game. Turn on the tape and you see an extremely high level of talent and an extremely high level of inconsistency.”

“[Philip] Montgomery will want to simplify things for him (Drones); we’re curious if they stay run-heavy or spread it out more.”

It's no secret that Drones is wildly different from game to game, Virginia Tech fans have seen that first-hand for two seasons now. Can that change under Montgomery, and if he simplifies things, does that get Drones going as the Hokies' season will go as Drones goes. Regardless, the thoughts about Tech are rather interesting from fellow conference coaches.
