Could one ACC coach be a serious candidate at LSU to replace Brian Kelly?

If there is one thing we are learning about the 2025 college football season, it's that this coaching cycle over the next couple of months is going to be bonkers. We are not even to November yet, and eight power conference jobs are open.

It's not just that eight Power Conference jobs are open, including Virginia Tech. It's the high-profile jobs that make it so. Before this weekend, Penn State and Florida topped the list of desirable openings, until Sunday night, when LSU fired Brian Kelly.

Names are already being linked to the LSU opening, and one of the names is an ACC coach who has hit team sitting on top of the standings through nine weeks of the season.

Georgia Tech coach Brent Key linked to LSU opening

Brent Key has Georgia Tech on the rise in the ACC and on the path to a berth in the 12-team College Football Playoff in December. At 8-0, Georgia Tech has four more games on its schedule remaining, which includes a regular-season finale against Georgia, but Key has quickly turned the Yellow Jackets into an ACC contender and was linked to the LSU opening by ESPN.

"He's a Georgia Tech guy and has his alma mater positioned for a run at the ACC title and the program's first CFP appearance. Key wouldn't leave for just any job, but he would have to consider LSU. He's no stranger to the program after coaching Alabama's offensive line from 2016 to 2018 under Saban and participating in the annual LSU showdown. Key, 47, grew up in Alabama and has spent his entire career in the Southeast, including more than a decade at UCF in various roles. Key is 26-16 at Georgia Tech as a first-time head coach and has thrived in big games with a 7-1 record against ranked ACC opponents. He would bring a clear recruiting vision and an approach based around the line of scrimmage to LSU."

It's not surprising to see Key linked to this opening or any other one, but getting him away from his alma mater, but never say never when money talks these days of college football. Expect Key to get a call, but what happens after that is anyone's guess.
