If there is one thing that you can count on every football season, if you’re a Virginia Tech fan, you will go through a season that will cause more pain than happiness when all is said and done over the last decade-plus. There is also, however, Thanksgiving Weekend to look forward to, knowing that the result is usually going to go your way.

Over the last 21 seasons, the result on the gridiron between Virginia Tech and Virginia has gone to the Hokies, who have won 19 of those 21 battles. It’s safe to say that the Commonwealth Cup being in Blacksburg is becoming a yearly ritual.

Right now, both programs are stuck in rebuilding and trying to get on track under Brent Pry and Tony Elliott. In what has become a yearly tradition, The Athlon quotes ACC football coaches about programs throughout the conference anonymously, and this year, some coaches didn’t hold back when discussing Virginia.

Some coaches didn’t hold back when discussing Virginia, and they even threw some serious shade at the program that was 5-6 last season, looking to become bowl-eligible with a win in Blacksburg Thanksgiving Weekend, only to lose, 37-17. It was Virginia Tech’s sixth win, and they got the extra month of football practice and a bowl game.

“These guys are in trouble, and most everyone expects there to be a staff change at the end of the season or earlier.”

“This is a team you never really worry about playing. They lack discipline, and they have no real identity. The parity in this league is increasing, and it will be really hard for this program to make a sharp turn up.”

I know, I know, what has Virginia Tech done lately? They provided a 3-8 first season under Pry, then two 6-6 campaigns, with last season being a huge swing and miss that cost three assistants their jobs. Nobody is denying the troubles for the Hokies, but it seems there are bigger problems down the road with the Cavaliers.

Now we’ll never know who said those quotes, but those are some interesting shots fired. Like Pry in Blacksburg, Elliott is entering a vital season for his tenure in Charlottesville, and if the results don’t improve, changes could be made. If the results don’t improve, these quotes won’t age well. At least Pry got some love from his coaching fraternity when it came to Virginia Tech in the same article. The Commonwealth Cup could be a big one for a lot of people this year.
