The month of September is coming to a close on Wednesday, but Fall Ball is in full swing for college baseball teams. This upcoming Saturday, Virginia Tech and Virginia will meet up in Fredericksburg for a scrimmage.
However, it appears that it might be the only time the diamond rivals meet between now and the ACC Tournament, if they even do at all. On Monday, Hokies coach John Szefc met with the media and said that Virginia Tech and Virginia were not scheduled to meet on the diamond this season in an ACC series.
ACC drops the ball in baseball scheduling with no Virginia/Virginia Tech series
Apparently, rivals are not protected on the baseball field by the ACC in terms of playing each other. Thank god it is in football. We are still waiting for the ACC opponents to be announced, but no Virginia/Virginia Tech best-of-three series in the spring is ridiculous.
Sure, the Cavaliers have gotten the better of the Hokies in the series, but still, it's a fun weekend for both fanbases. Apparently, the ACC doesn't like to allow fanbases to have fun on a weekend in the spring against their heated rivals. Szefc did mention that there is some talk of the two schools playing a non-conference game, possibly at Nationals Park in Washington, DC, the home of the Washington Nationals. Szefc and his staff did a great job of getting retention last spring after the Hokies made the NCAA Tournament and were bounced in the Los Angeles Regional by Cal Poly and the top-ranked Bruins. There were some additions from the portal as well, and Szefc began his press conference by speaking about having a talented team, something that should give fans hope going into 2027.
However, leave it up to the ACC to be a downer and not have a series scheduled. This past season, the ACC had the Hokies and Cavaliers meet in the second series of the season in mid-March. That's right, in mid-March. Why can't rivals meet the final weekend of the regular season every year? That makes too much sense, and the ACC doesn't like doing things that make sense sometimes.
It's only September, and we still have four-plus months before the season starts, but no Virginia/Virginia Tech series is a huge letdown for both fanbases.
