In this edition of Virginia Tech News, the football transfer portal is officially open, the new women’s Top 25 poll is released, and the men’s basketball team honors one of their guards for a record-breaking night.

The football transfer portal is officially open

At midnight on Dec. 4, the college football transfer portal officially opened up. As far as Virginia Tech goes, tight end Dae’Quan Wright and running back Bryce Duke have already announced that they’re entering the portal. Expect the Hokies to be active in the portal, mainly looking for linemen and offensive ones.

One player that Virginia Tech got in the portal last offseason is returning to Blacksburg in 2024. Antwaun Powell-Ryland said that he’ll be back for another season with the Hokies. That’s big news for Virginia Tech’s defense going into next season.

Virginia Tech men’s basketball honors Hunter Cattoor

Before their 75-68 ACC win over Louisville Sunday afternoon, Hokies coach Mike Young honored senior Hunter Cattoor for breaking the school’s all-time 3-point record in a game Thanksgiving night against Boise State. He hit the milestone shot in the first half of the ESPN Events Invitational in his hometown in Orlando.

Cattoor passed A.D. Vassallo for all-time makes from behind the arc with 268. He did it in nine fewer games than Vassallo.

Women’s basketball falls in latest Associated Press Top 25 rankings

The women dropped six spots in the latest AP Top 25 rankings to No. 15 following their 82-64 loss at LSU in the first ACC/SEC Challenge last Thursday. It was the second loss of the season for Kenny Brooks’ team after losing on Nov. 9, 80-76, to Caitlin Clark and Iowa in Charlotte.

Virginia Tech returns to Cassell Coliseum Wednesday night looking to get back in the win column in a non-conference game against 1-6 Long Island.
