For the second time in the first month of the 2023-24 season, the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team will have a Top 10 matchup. In their second game of the season, they fell, 80-76, to No. 3 Iowa in Charlotte on Nov. 9. Now, the Hokies get a chance against the team that eliminated them in the Final Four last spring in Dallas.

The ACC/SEC Challenge is in its first season and Virginia Tech will play at LSU on Thursday night in a Top 10 showdown with the Tigers currently ranked No. 7 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 Poll and the Hokies still at No. 9. This is sure to be must-watch TV early in the season.

Virginia Tech vs. LSU, Prediction

This has the makings of a 40-minute barn burner. LSU is coming off a National Championship after beating Iowa in the title game. Virginia Tech returns ar good core with Georgia Amoore, Cayla King, and Elizabeth Kitley. LSU has played without Angel Reese recently after her benching in a Nov. 14 game and she will return against Virginia Tech, to nobody’s surprise.

LSU coach Kim Mulkey did answer questions surrounding Reese’s absence from the team, most recently at the first Cayman Island Classic last weekend, the same two-day tournament that Virginia Tech attended, but they get her back Thursday night. The Tigers survived a scare from Virginia in their second game to win, 79-76. Virginia Tech’s offense goes through Amoore and Kitley, while King, has been big from behind the 3-point arc in the beginning of the season.

Something is going to have to give in the game as the Hokies enter the game averaging 80 points a game, while the Tigers are allowing an average of 63 points a game. Virginia Tech is 4-1 this season when they score 64 or more points. The question here will be whether or not they can get enough stops defensively to win in an extremely tough environment.

Prediction: LSU 65, Virginia Tech 62
