Following the 2022 season, Virginia Tech football coach Brent Pry hit the transfer portal and hit it hard. One look at the success that the Hokies have had the last eight weeks is credited to the players that were brought in from the portal.

Bhayshu Tuten, Kyron Drones, Jaylin Lane, and Da’Quan Felton are just four offensive players who came from the portal that has had a big hand in the Hokies winning five out of eight conference games to become bowl-eligible after their 55-17 win over Virginia Saturday.

The 2023 college football regular season is over and all that is left is the conference championship games this weekend, then bowl season. Despite 82 teams going bowling this season, including the Hokies, players from across college football are hitting the transfer portal already.

One player on Monday announced that he is entering the portal and Virginia Tech should make a push to land him as a graduate transfer.

Former Virginia Tech recruit Chris Tyree of Notre Dame entered the portal

Virginia native Chris Tyree announced Monday that is leaving Notre Dame and entering the portal. The Chester native is someone who the Hokies recruited back in 2018 and he even visited campus for a game at Lane Stadium.

Before the Irish visited Blacksburg for a game in 2021, Tyree spoke about what it was like when he visited the Virginia Tech campus.

“The stadium was literally shaking, it was so loud,” Tyree said, recalling a visit he took to Lane Stadium back in 2018.

Tyree has been a playmaker for the Irish in his time in South Bend and this season the wide receiver had 26 receptions for 484 yards and three touchdowns. He averaged 18.6 yards a reception.

Obviously, Pry was not the head coach in 2018 when Tyree made his visit to Lane Stadium, but now the second-year Hokies coach should be going after Tyree to add him for 2024. Drones has been getting better each week over the last two months and he has done a good job throwing the ball and having his receivers make plays. Tyree, however, is a receiver who if he comes to Virginia Tech, can be a game-changer for Drones. Time to do everything possible to bring him home.
